The
Duluth News Tribune online polls

Five recent online polls offered by the Duluth News Tribune show the magnitude of public dissatisfaction with the School Board, the District, and the Red Plan. The Tribune which has been slow to catch on to public anger offered a very incomplete poll on 8/04/08 by not giving people a chance to specify that no operational money should be given to the Board. That was rectified in today’s poll on the upcoming operational referendum. There will be a school board election next year. Any bets on what will happen?

Poll on 7/16/08

Did the Duluth School Board choose the right sites for two new schools?

Total Votes: 475

What do you think should be done with the Duluth Central High School site?

Residential development
21.21%

Commercial development
14.29%

Park
24.96%

Educational institution
34.02%

Something else
5.52%

Total Votes: 1358

Note: when it was mentioned that keeping Central a High School hadn’t been listed in this poll the DNT replied that "Educational Institution" could mean keeping it a high school.

Poll on 8/04/08

What per pupil funding level would you OK for Duluth public schools?

  $365
43.95%

$1,100
20.83%

$1,400
35.22%

Total Votes: 653

Note: that zero was not an option. Given no other answer most people chose the smallest level of support.

Poll on 8/06/08

Do you think Duluth public schools are making progress in math, reading participation, attendance and graduation?

Yes
27.04%

No
72.96%

Total Votes: 662

Note: that whenever 70 percent of people think you are doing a lousy job educating children, a new school board is the likely outcome. I think that the Duluth Schools are doing pretty well but they will be hard pressed to continue doing well when the Board slashes $11 million or nearly 10% of  the classroom budget away.

$1,200 per student
17.57%
Zero
56.49%
Total Votes: 979

Note: As of this writing this poll is still open.
